We're playing our 5th annual Nyack Halloween Parade, kicking off the festivities

September 2019

It was a wonderful experience flying to Denver, CO for a big show with my bandmates in Bobby Deitch Band, joined by Lettuce's Adam Deitch and Adam "Shmeeans" Smirnoff. The band was on point, and it's always a privilege to play with my favorite drummer.

August 2019

On August 21st, I'm excited to play a Jazz Forum Arts outdoor concert at Waterfront Park in Dobbs Ferry 6:30-8pm. I listen to Jazz the most of all genres but rarely dip my toes too far in when I’m performing. It was super fun to put together a set that incorporates aspects of jazz but also plays to my strengths and other musical interests. I’ll be on guitar, playing with awesome players Jeff Mann (drums), Matt Wayne (sax), Lawrence Haber (bass), and Yan Falmagne (keys).

Thanks Carly Rae Photo for this shot.

I Anbassa put out 2 singles this year - "Sweet Kali Herb" and "Stand Firm". The team did an awesome job in the studio. When we tracked "Sweet Kali Herb", the producer Denroy Morgan and I Anbassa switched up the feel from a straight reggae to what you hear on the track. This gave me the opportunity to express myself by making new basslines from the old ones that kept their main elements but also gave them new life in this new context. I also got to write and play guitar parts on both tracks, chiming in with elements of Afrobeat, Hip-Hop and Soul mixed with Reggae.

I started to collaborate with Cousin Earth's Joey Calfa. We've been playing songs as a duo with electric guitar and ukulele. He was one of my inspirations when I started making solo instrumental guitar videos. We both come with the same intention, to express how we hear songs with just our hands, but as you can see in the video, we use totally different styles and techniques.

February 2019

I celebrated my birthday by starting to record my debut album comprised of songs I've written over the last 20 years. It was great to have my long time pal Jeff Mann of Consider the Source in the studio playing drums on all of the tracks. And great to work with engineer Matt Wayne.

This year, I've started to record my solo electric guitar arrangements of classic songs and posting them on instagram and youtube @DaveReissMusic. I express the melody, harmony and rhythm of the tunes within the limitations of my two hands. I'm excited with how it's allowed me to more fully inspect and better express how I hear music. Every person hears things their own way and I think one of the exciting parts of following musicians is getting to hear songs through their lens.

The most fun part of being a musician for me is creating and performing in the studio. Whatever you decide to do on that day will be how people hear the song forever, so it’s high stakes. But you gotta sound relaxed and open to improvisation to give it the human feel. This was a fun take on the Bobby Deitch Band song “Work With What You Got”. A bunch of great artists are guesting on this track including Michelangelo Carubba of Turkuaz smoking it on drums. This album is due out in late 2019.

Lately I've been playing guitar and bass with reggae artists Denroy Morgan, Anita Antoinette, I Anbassa and Lamboginny.

I’ve learned a lot from playing guitar with reggae icon Denroy Morgan. Going back to the 70’s, he’s always had fiery lead guitar brandished in his originals, especially on intros and solos, to provide an exciting rock edge to his roots reggae.

After learning the nuances of so many of those guitar parts, it was very fun to be asked to create my own lead guitar parts for his newest single “Super G Man”. Here’s a clip from our recording session at Northfire Recording Studio in Amherst, MA. It’s not the keeper take, but it was close. On the final mix, there’s also a horn section playing a melody on this intro, while my part peeks through the gaps.

I’m happy with this solo from July 12th, 2018 on Denroy Morgan’s version of the meaningful, pertinent Bob Marley & The Wailers tune “Get Up, Stand Up”.  It’s based on the solo that Denroy's previous guitarist took on the album cut, but some alterations and happy accidents help make it sound like me.

I like the section after even more, when we are subtly improvising, just playing around, establishing a musical feeling. Reggae, like life, is a mix of exciting stuff happening, and periods of relative inaction and contemplation, before the next movement happens.

May 2018

I'll be posting up at Bourbon Street in Nyack every Tuesday in May for my first run of solo shows. I'll be playing acoustic and singing some of my favorites. And I'll play instrumental electric guitar arrangements of other classics.

For the last year or so, I've been working on a way to convey songs more fully with my two hands. I'm excited with how it's allowed me to more fully inspect and better express how I hear music. Every person hears things their own way and I think one of the exciting parts of following musicians is getting to hear songs through their lens. This series of shows will be a good way to know what I'm hearing and hopefully witness an evolution as I continually improve my ability to convey it.

Thanks to Bourbon Street for providing me with a venue to present what I'm feeling musically for the last decade.

It has been very fulfilling to help young guitarist/drummer Cory Logan hone his skills on guitar and prepare for his auditions and performances for School of Rock on Broadway.

He plays the role of James and is the understudy for the guitarist Zack and drummer Freddy. I had a great time seeing him act, sing and play guitar live last month in the lead role of Zack. He's reprising the role on Monday, April 2nd and Tuesday, April 3rd.

Bobby Deitch Band got a great review in this month's Modern Drummer Magazine and I got a mention for my bass playing on the title track "Grateful"...

"Bobby's arranging chops shine on the title track with Earth, Wind & Fire-style horns over a tight pocket from Adam (Deitch) and Bobby's regular bassist, Dave Reiss".

Forming a tight pocket with the drummer is the primary objective of a bass player. It was a thrilling experience to get to give it my best alongside Adam Deitch, and very cool that the drummer's magazine dug our band's album and my playing.
